The concept of “less is more” has ancient philosophical origins, but it has become a necessity in modern society. In present times, when materialism, over-consumption, and the desperate need to own fleeting fads have taken over the world, the idea of mindful consumption and finding beauty in simplicity is truly liberating.
But this concept is not limited to mere minimalism. It also emphasises how fewer distractions, pressures and commitments can make life feel fuller. In contemporary society, distractions, social obligations and social media platforms have led people to set unattainable expectations for themselves and their relationships. In the process, they drain themselves and are unable to feel their own life amidst all the noise.
Here, the theory “less is more” comes into play. It can refer to choosing meaningful hobbies rather than trying to be a productivity robot, or talking to a few close friends rather than constantly performing for everyone. It leads to higher self-worth, deeper connections, more energy and less mental clutter.
It seems to me that the “less is more” ideology is not a mere lifestyle choice or owning beige furniture and one sad ceramic mug, but it goes beyond architecture or minimalism. It compels us to remove the excess-noise, distractions, comparisons just so we can feel our own life again, making this thought indispensable in modern society.
