Republic Day celebration reminds us of the long journey
to freedom and the struggle of our forefathers

Pool A – Vidushi Mishra Singh / Class 9

Republic Day is observed to celebrate the implementation of our Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950, which further replaced the Government of India Act that imposed the date on our country. India gained independence on August 15, 1947, but until then, India was deprived of any constitution of its own.Our Constitution is the essence and a culminated product of the efforts of all our freedom fighters and the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr Rajendra Prasad. Dr Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution…Its motives were lofty and noble, as Nehru stated, “The first task of this Assembly is to free India through a new constitution, to feed the starving people, and to give every Indian the fullest opportunity to develop himself according to his capacity.” This day not only displays India’s military prowess but also promotes its diverse culture. In addition, the event pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. India’s Prime Minister honours the martyrs by placing a ringlet at India Gate’s Amar Jawan Jyoti. The ceremony continues with a 21-gun salute, national anthem, and hoisting of the national flag. As a result, the brave soldiers are presented with the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Children and ordinary citizens who have shown courage in difficult circumstances are also recognized with awards.
