Nana Rao Park/Company Bagh is a public city park in Kanpur

Pool B – Jazlyn Kaur / Class 8

Nana Rao Park/Company Bagh is a public city park in Kanpur, the industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh, India, built after Indian independence in honour of Nana Sahib. Before independence, the location was known as Memorial Hall and commemorated the massacre of British women and children during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Nana Rao Park in Kanpur is a microcosm for the history of India since
1857. The park is located in the central area of Kanpur district and is close to Phool Bagh, LI.C building. Today the memorials tell the story of the 1857 rebellion through the lens of Indian nationalism. The park is replete with statues of eminent people who played a part in the Indian independent struggle. Before Indian independence in 1947, however, the park operated as a space to ideologically reinforce British imperialism. Nana Sahib’s role in the rebellion was to rally the sepoys and lead them to revolt against British rule. He provided leadership and direction to the rebels and he was a symbol of Indian independence. He organized the defence of Kanpur and his forces fought fiercely against the British troops.
